Aspen, United States

Overview

Ask most Colorado skiers what they mean by Aspen and they will say: the town of Aspen, coupled with Aspen Mountain, also known by the locals as Ajax, in the heart of the Elk Mountain range . But it's not that simple. Although Aspen likes to boast: “There's only one”, the Aspen Skiing Company actually runs four resorts: Aspen, its neighbour Aspen Highlands, just three miles from town, and, next to Highlands, Buttermilk (all in the celebrated 'Roaring Fork Valley') and then, some 12 miles out of town, Snowmass, also known as Snowmass-at-Aspen, which is treated much more as a separate resort than Highlands or Buttermilk. None of the four is linked, although there is often talk of linking some or all in various permutations.

Altitude: 2422m - 3815m.
