SkiingSkiing at Sestriere trades on the enormous scope of the lift-linked Milky Way - or in Italian, the Via Lattea - and on snow conditions uncharacteristically good for this region. North-facing slopes, high altitudes, and snowmaking equipment ensure snow cover and, following the 2006 Olympic Games, it enjoys vast improvements to the uplift system, trail network, and extensive snowmaking capacity. Crowding can be problematic during weekends and holidays, when hordes flock in from Milan and Turin. Weekday visitors enjoy silent slopes and wait-free lift lines. Beginners have vast opportunities throughout the Milky Way, but Sestriere is known to have the region's more difficult slopes. “Never-evers” head for any of the 12 nursery slopes in the region, and Sestriere reserves its Manovia area only for beginners. Intermediates explore the long trails and forever views throughout the entire region, and adventurous mid-level skiers can try heli-skiing. Advanced skiers take the drag up Motta, the highest and steepest point in the Milky Way region, or race down the World Cup trail at Kandahar. | |
