SkiingChamonix lies in the lee of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in western Europe. It is home to the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix, the oldest and most renowned mountain guiding service in the world. As in many other parts of the Alps, the pioneering climbers were British. The tallest landmark is the Aiguille du Midi, a 3,842-m granite needle above Chamonix that acts as the starting point for some of the most beautiful off-piste skiing in the Alps.Chamonix is not so much a single resort as a chain of unconnected ski areas set along both sides of the valley dominated by Mont Blanc. The success of a visit to Chamonix depends in part on the vagaries of the weather. On sunny days, it is glitteringly beautiful and deceptively tranquil. On stormy days, of which there are many, it is a brooding place, menaced by razor-sharp peaks and tumbling walls of ice. | |
