New lifts in St Moritz

St Moritz has invested nearly £8 million on Corvatsch (one of its four separate ski areas) this summer. This winter you’ll find a new cable car to the top replacing the old one and able to carry 1,200 people each hour (30% more than the old one) plus a new fast quad chairlift at mid-mountain, making a pleasant alternative to a t-bar. There are plans for the 2009/10 season to link the two adjacent ski areas of Lagalb and Diavolezza by a new fast quad from valley level plus new black, red and blue pistes.

New link in Cortina

The small but excellent Cinque Torre ski area (which incidentally has one of Momentum Ski’s favourite restaurants, Refugio Averau with great views and delicious squid ink pasta) will have a new chair lift and piste for this winter. These will link directly to Passo Falzarego and the cable car from there to the start of the spectacularly beautiful ‘ Hidden Valley’ run.

Paradiski back in business

Last season the cable car linking Les Arcs to La Plagne to form the huge Paradiski area was closed because of a problem with the cables. These have now been replaced and it will be working again this winter.

Serre-Chevalier moves upmarket

This winter Serre-Chevalier will open a smart new thermal spa. Les Grands Bains has indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, a waterfall and some areas reserved for the over-18s. The resort will also see its first 4-star hotel - the Best Western Premier Chantemerle.

Ski Welt at last properly linked

Westendorf is a cute little village that has always been classified as part of the Ski Welt, Austria’s biggest ski area. But it had never been linked to rest of the circuit by lift and piste – you had to catch a bus both ways. Last season a piste to Brixen was built. And for this season it will at last be properly linked, by a new 8-seater gondola from Brixen to Choralpe, 1000m above Westendorf. The gondola itself will be reached via the world’s first solar-powered drag lift in Brixen. This £13 million investment means you’ll be able to get to and from Westendorf from the rest of the Ski Welt circuit without bussing. A couple of years ago Westendorf was linked to the Kitzbühel ski area by a new piste and gondola back. But you still need a bus from the base of that gondola. When they sort out that discontinuity, they’ll have one of the largest ski areas in the world.

Jackson Hole gets a new Tram

Jackson Hole ’s old Tram (US-speak for cable car) was taken out of service a couple of seasons ago, leaving the report without a top-to-bottom lift. This season will at last see its replacement in place – it will have double the capacity of the old one, hopefully eliminating the long queues that used to form. Last season, Jackson also got a smart new restaurant complex on the mountain – including a table-service restaurant that it has needed badly for years.
